The K-pop girl group UNIS, formed through the survival show Universe Ticket, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with pinkvilla to discuss their latest mini-album SWICY, their creative process, and their ambitions for 2025. The eight-member group, consisting of Hyeonju, Nana, Gehlee, Kotoko, Yunha, Elisia, Yoona, and Seowon, debuted in March 2024 and has been steadily gaining attention with their versatile performances.
A Blend of Sweet and Spicy
The title track SWICY combines the words “sweet” and “spicy,” reflecting the group’s dual charm. When asked about the inspiration behind the concept, Hyeonju explained:
“SWICY is a new word that combines SWEET and SPICY. I think it would be a bit boring to only show one thing: sweet or spicy, and we wanted to show both the spicy and sweet charms that are unique to UNIS.”

Each member also shared their own take on what ingredients would make the perfect SWICY dish:
- Hyeonju: Gochujang and sugar, with tteokbokki representing the song.
- Nana: Rice cake and Mitarashi Dango (a Japanese sweet and savory dumpling).
- Gehlee: Love, shine, hope, and charisma mixed into rose tteokbokki.
- Kotoko: Ice cream and French fries, comparing the song to a gochujang cookie.
- Yunha: Spicy ramen and sweet bread, with gochujang cookie as the best match.
- Elisia: Tteok (Korean rice cake) for its versatility.
- Yoona: Whipped cream and tteokbokki, creating rose tteokbokki.
- Seowon: Gochujang added to any dish for a SWICY twist.
Exploring New Challenges
The members discussed whether they stuck to their strengths or ventured into new territory with this comeback. Elisia shared:
“I think I’m really pushing myself to my limits and forging a new path! These songs are incredibly high with challenging choreographies, but the members and I worked hard to bring out an amazing, unexpected performance!”
Yoona added that she focused on expressing her individuality more clearly this time, while Gehlee mentioned growing more confident in her skills.
Goals for 2025
When asked about their aspirations for the year, multiple members emphasized their desire to win first place on music shows:
- Nana: “I want to win first place in the music show.”
- Yunha: “First place in ALL the music shows.”
- Elisia: “A happy, long, and healthy promotion and 1st place on a music show.”
- Yoona: “I want to win first place in a music show, which we unfortunately couldn’t achieve last year!”
Gehlee also expressed hopes for more opportunities to showcase the group’s talents.
